Windows 8 ist da und dementsprechend steigt auch die Nachfrage nach angepassten Apps. Einer der weltweit beliebtesten Media-Player ist seit vielen Jahren VLC und so ist es kaum verwunderlich, dass eine entsprechende Version bereits in Arbeit ist. Allerdings droht ein Distributionsproblem.

Die Windows-8-Version des VLC-Player ist ähnlich minimalistisch wie bislang und besteht aus nichts weiter, als ein paar Kacheln mit den wichtigsten Bedienfunktionen. Doch unter der Oberfläche wird es komplizierter: Grundsätzlich sollten alle Windows 8 Programme auf Wunsch von Microsoft über den Windows Store vertrieben werden. Auf Grund von Lizenzproblemen wird das bei VLC aber wohl nicht möglich sein. Der VLC-Player wird nicht nur unter einer GPL-Lizenz vertrieben, sondern nutzt auch Codecs, die unter einer ebensolchen Lizenz stehen. Diese Lizenz wiederum ist aber nicht mit Microsofts Store-Lizenz vereinbar, weshalb es wohl auch keinen VLC-Download über den Store geben wird.

Unter Windows 8 ist das zwar unpraktisch, aber kein besonderes Problem: Man wird sich das Programm einfach direkt von der Hersteller-Homepage oder von Portalen wie CHIP Online herunterladen und selbst installieren können. Anders sieht es unter Windows RT aus: Da bei der Tablet-Variante von Windows 8 Installationen nur über den Store vorgesehen sind, wird es wohl bis auf weiteres keine VLC-Version für Windows 8 geben.

Die x86-Version von VLC für Windows 8 soll demnächst erscheinen, ein konkretes Datum gibt es bislang aber noch nicht
