Am heutigen Freitag sind erste Leaks der Release-To-Manufacturing-Version (RTM) von Windows 8 aufgetaucht. Microsoft hatte erst am vergangenen Mittwoch bekannt gegeben, dass Windows 8 ab sofort an PC-Hersteller ausgeliefert wird. Diese sind damit die ersten, die die RTM-Version erhalten. Für Technet- und MSDN-Abonnenten wird Microsoft die finale Version erst am 15. August bereitstellen. Nun tauchte der Build 9200 in der englischen Version in einschlägigen Quellen im Internet auf.

Mit Windows 8 bietet Microsoft erstmals ein einheitliches Betriebssystem für mehrere Gerätearten an. Es läuft nicht nur auf herkömmlichen Desktop-PCs und Notebooks, sondern auch auf Tablets. Außer unterschiedlichen x86- und x64-Versionen wird es mit Windows RT eine Edition speziell für ARM-Tablets geben.

Die auffälligste Neuerung in Windows 8 ist das neue Bedienkonzept. Anstelle des bekannten Desktops begrüßt den Nutzer nach dem Start eine neue Bedienoberfläche, die das herkömmliche Startmenü ersetzt. Sie ist auf die Nutzung mit einem Touchscreen ausgelegt, soll sich laut Microsoft aber auch mit Maus und Tastatur gut bedienen lassen. Die Programme liegen auf dem Startscreen als Kacheln und dienen zum Starten der Anwendung und zum Anzeigen von Informationen.

Im Build 9200 fehlen nun wie angekündigt die Schatten und Transparenzen von Aero Glass, die mit Windows Vista eingeführt wurden. Der Desktop erscheint dadurch kontrastreicher und schlichter und soll sich optisch an das Windows-8 Style UI anpassen. Im Unterschied zu den öffentlichen Vorabversionen stehen nun eine große und kleine Ansicht für die Kacheln im Kontextmenü zur Auswahl.

In den Einzelhandel kommt Windows 8 am 26. Oktober. Für Käufer eines Komplett-PCs bietet Microsoft mit den Upgrade Coupons einen kostengünstigen Weg an, auf Windows 8 zu wechseln. Die Käufer eines teilnahmeberechtigten PC erhalten dann für rund 15 Euro die Pro-Version des neuen Betriebssystems.
