Mozilla will die Entwicklung von Windows 64-Bit-Versionen für Firefox nicht weiterführen. Nutzern wird empfohlen, die 32-Bit-Version zu benutzen. Als Grund für die Entscheidung nennt Mozillas Entwicklungschef Benjamin Smedberg auf der Entwickler-Mailingliste die schlechten Erfahrungen, die viele Nutzer mit der Version machen.

Viele Plugins seien nicht als 64-Bit-Version verfügbar, erklärt Smedberg. Die Plugins, die es gibt, würden den Browser häufig instabil machen. Da das Team gerade andere Dinge höher priorisiere, könnten die nötigen Änderungen nicht vorgenommen werden. Und Fehlerberichte seien in der Statistik nicht von denen der 32-Bit-Versionen zu unterscheiden. "Das frustriert diese Nutzer, weil sie sich als Nutzer zweiter Klasse fühlen (und es sind!)", schreibt Smedberg.

Die Nightly-Versionen des 64-Bit-Firefox sollen nun nicht mehr erscheinen. Nachdem dies als Aufgabe in Bugzilla eingestellt wurde, meldeten sich dort viele kritische Stimmen. Manche Nutzer versprechen sich eine bessere Leistung von einer 64-Bit-Version und wurden enttäuscht.
