Die beliebten kurzen Texte des Short Messaging Service (SMS) werden vermutlich bald kaum noch eine Rolle spielen.

Wie Yahoo News meldet, sinken die Einnahmen der Mobilfunk-Anbieter durch SMS Jahr für Jahr deutlich. Grund dafür sind laut Marktforschern die vielen weiteren Möglichkeiten, über moderne Smartphones Nachrichten zu verschicken, beispielsweise über Instant Messaging, spezielle Messaging-Apps oder soziale Netzwerke.

Diese Angebote seien entweder günstiger oder sogar kostenlos, würden aber mehr Möglichkeiten und eine bessere Benutzeroberfläche bieten. Während die Nutzung des mobilen Internets immer mehr zunimmt und damit die SMS unterwegs verdrängt, bieten andere Apps wie beispielsweise WhatsApp sogar zusätzlich die Möglichkeit, über WLAN Nachrichten zu verschicken oder zu telefonieren, teilweise sogar mit Video.

Aktuell sind zwar nur 12 Prozent aller Mobiltelefone Smartphones, doch bei wachsendem Anteil und immer mehr Möglichkeiten für mobiles Internet und WLAN-Nutzung werden SMS bald keine Rolle mehr spielen. Vor allem für die Mobilfunk-Anbieter, die bisher gut an SMS verdienen, dürfte dies unangenehme Folgen haben.
